Migrant dies at frozen border

An African immigrant who had entered Greece illegally from Turkey was found dead outside a border village in Thrace yesterday. He is believed to have died of exposure and exhaustion during the long, nighttime trek in sub-zero temperatures. The man, whose name and nationality were not available yesterday, died on the outskirts of the village of Sofiko, north of the border town of Didymoteicho and a mere 5 kilometers (3 miles) from the border. Police believe he may have been with a group of illegal immigrants who abandoned him for fear of arrest and deportation should they seek help. Early last month, an Iranian woman died of exposure while making the border crossing with her husband. Unable to believe his wife was dead, the man carried her body wrapped in a plastic bag to a roadside, where motorists saw them and called the police. Tens of thousands of illegal immigrants enter Greece from Turkey every year, braving live minefields and freezing winter temperatures.
