Migrants killed on border

Two African illegal immigrants died on the Thracian border after straying into a minefield in thick fog while trying to enter Greece clandestinely, the army said on Sunday. A third man suffered severe injuries which led to his leg being amputated. The three men from Burundi entered the fenced, signposted minefield near the village of Marassia - north of Orestiada and a few hundred meters from the Turkish border - at 2.30 a.m. on Saturday, in the apparent belief that they were crossing a simple frontier fence. According to an army statement, mine disposal experts were delayed by the extremely poor visibility and took eight hours to reach the wounded man and remove the two bodies. Meanwhile, over the past three days coast guard discovered the drowned corpses of five men and one woman on beaches on the Dodecanese island of Symi. The body of another man was discovered on a beach on Evia. According to the Merchant Marine Ministry, the bodies had been in the sea for a long time. All are believed to have been illegal immigrants who drowned trying to reach Greek shores.
