Storm causes floods, damage on Zakynthos

A heavy thunderstorm early on Thursday wreaked damage to farms, roads and other infrastructure on the Ionian island of Zakynthos as snowfall hit parts of northern Greece.

The storm caused landslides, blocking many roads on the island and razed large vineyards and many agricultural tracts.

The most serious damage was said to be around the island?s international airport, near the southern town of Kalamaki, and several villages were also badly hit. Most of the damage in the main port of Zakynthos was to roads and the drainage system. There were no reports of any injuries.

Teams of municipal employees were working to open up roads and assess the damage to local agriculture.

In northern Greece, particularly in the prefecture of Thessaloniki, snowfall made transport precarious but roads remained open. Local traffic police appealed to motorists to equip the wheels of their vehicles with anti-skid chains if possible and to show caution. There was also snowfall in the prefectures of Florina, Kozani and Grevena.
