Teachers walk off job to protest school mergers

Secondary school teachers are staging two work stoppages on Friday in support of pupils and parents that are protesting the government?s decision to merge dozens of schools around the country.

The government has announced that the schools will be merged in a bid to cut costs and make better use of the teaching personnel but pupils and teachers are concerned that this will lead to overcrowding and poorer conditions.

The Federation of Secondary Education School Teachers has said its members will walk off the job between noon and 2 p.m. and 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Meanwhile, lawyers are on strike until March 22 in protest at the government?s latest tax reforms.
