Residents rally at spot of city murder

Dozens of demonstrators on Thursday converged at the spot on Triti Septemvriou Street near central Athens where a 44-year-old man was fatally stabbed on Tuesday to protest the attack, the latest in a string of violent muggings in the capital.

Prime Minister George Papandreou, in a written statement issued on Wednesday, condemned the murder of the 44-year-old who had been preparing to take his pregnant wife to the hospital when he was attacked by three assailants. Papandreou declared that additional measures would be heralded by next week with the aim of improving safety for city-dwellers. ?We are determined to guarantee the safety of citizens and to take all the necessary measures within the tight confines of the current fiscal situation,? the premier said in a written statement issued after a cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis was more outspoken in comments made on Skai television on Thursday, expressing his fear that Athens would soon resemble Beirut in the 1970s if immediate action is not taken to crack down on spiraling crime.
