Terror link in shooting probe

A suspect detained on Wednesday after a shootout in Pefki, northern Athens, which left two policemen injured, has been identified as a 21-year-old student at a technical college on Lesvos, officers said on Thursday.

The suspect, who has not been named, was identified on Thursday after police published his photograph. Suspicions of a link to a domestic terrorist group were raised after the 21-year-old initially gave police a false name.

According to sources, these suspicions have been all but confirmed as a fingerprint found in a hideout in Volos, central Greece, used by alleged members of the Conspiracy of the Cells of Fire urban guerrilla group, matched his.

Police told Kathimerini that the suspect?s parents claimed their son had not been staying at their home in Holargos for quite some time.

Officers added that they had used the 21-year-old?s cell phone to trace the second suspect, who fled with the injured officers? patrol car after the shooting.
