Kavala moving over to Thessaloniki
The merger of Kavala and relegated Iraklis is now more likely than ever, as Kavala president Stavros Psomiadis announced on July 2 that the Super League club will be leaving its hometown for good this summer to move to Thessaloniki.
The announcement came just a few days after the Thessaloniki club’s members also voted for the full merger of the two clubs.
Psomiadis, who was only released at the end of June on bail after his alleged participation in the match-fixing scandal, has for the last few weeks been at loggerheads with the mayor of Kavala, Constantinos Simitzis, regarding the use and the lease of the Macedonian city?s municipal stadium.
Psomiadis seems to have found the pretext he needed to move the club from Kavala, as on Friday he tried to submit an application to rename the club ?New Iraklis.?
Should the merger clear the thorough investigation by the Professional Sports Commission which Panos Bitsaxis, the general secretary for sports, has demanded, the new club will be based at Iraklis?s home ground, the Kaftanzoglio Stadium, bear Iraklis?s colors and have the tax registration number of Kavala.
