Greek, Turkish foreign ministers discuss fire comment
The Greek and Turkish foreign ministers, Stavros Dimas and Ahmet Davutoglu, spoke on the telephone on Wednesday following an official complaint from Athens about comments from former Turkish Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz relating to forest fires in Greece in the mid-1990s.
The Greek Foreign Ministry said Dimas stressed how important it was that Ankara investigate the claims that in the past Turkey?s intelligence services paid arsonists to set fire to forests in Greece.
Davutoglu, who placed the call, invited Dimas to a meeting of Turkish ambassadors taking place this week but the Greek foreign minister was not able to attend due to prior commitments. The two men agreed to meet soon, the ministry said.
After making the comments in Turkish daily newspaper Birgun last weekend, Yilmaz said that his words had been distorted and that he was referring to Greek agents causing fires in Turkey.
