LAOS leader rejects bailout deal but open to cooperation

The leader of the right-wing Popular Orthodox Rally (LAOS), Giorgos Karatzaferis, indicated early on Thursday that he was unwilling to agree to the terms of a new bailout for Greece.

Leaving the Maximos Mansion, Karatzaferis quoted a poem by Constantine P. Cavafy, suggesting that he had rejected the deal.

On returning to his party?s headquarters, he clarified that he objected to signing the agreement because he did not have enough time to study it. On Wednesday, Karatzaferis had asked for the document to be translated from English into Greek so he could assess it before the leaders? meeting.

Despite not agreeing, the leader of the junior partner in the three-party coalition said that he did not want to cause any problems for the government and indicated he would keep on supporting it.

Karatzaferis added that he supported New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras in an effort to prevent drastic cuts to supplementary pensions.
