Fresh slide for bank stocks for 10th straight session

Bank stocks took another beating on Monday as their sectoral index slid for the 10th consecutive session, dragging the Greek bourse?s benchmark index closer to the 700-point level.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended the day at 713.66 points, declining by 2.09 percent from Friday?s closing level of 728.93 points. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 lost 3.28 percent to close at 273.31 points.

Piraeus Bank edged out Eurobank EFG as the day?s worst performer among blue chips. Piraeus dropped 14.33 percent against Eurobank?s 14.31 percent fall.

In contrast, Viohalco added 3.75 percent and Ellaktor gained 3.36 percent.

In total, 40 stocks registered gains, 96 posted losses and 20 remained unchanged.

Turnover failed to top 32 million euros, down from 34.4 million on Friday.
