Seamen should stop strike

The upcoming strike announced by workers in the Greek coastal shipping sector should be recalled. The strike has been called for next Tuesday and Wednesday, during Holy Week.

Everyone appreciates the problems plaguing those working in a sector which is facing major, if not unsolvable, issues in terms of its social insurance.

Nevertheless, it is unthinkable that a single group can so crudely undermine the Greek economy at such a difficult time.

With the local tourism industry eagerly awaiting the Easter holiday period in hopes of boosting turnover, thousands of Greeks will suffer pointless losses as a result of the strike.

Huge damage will also be done to the country?s image abroad at a time when European and American holidaymakers are making their summer vacation plans.

Let?s hope that the country?s seamen, as well as their union?s leadership, will show the necessary maturity and responsibility.
