Ex-minister’s wife on hunger strike
Viki Stamati, the wife of former Defense Minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos, who was remanded in custody on Friday after being charged with money laundering, went on a hunger strike at Korydallos Prison on Monday, according to her lawyer.
Stamati is being held at the maximum security prison along with her husband and his daughter from another marriage, Areti.
She has denied charges that she helped Tsochatzopoulos launder money received as kickbacks from arms procurements during his tenure as minister through the purchase of a residence on the exclusive Dionysiou Aeropagitou Street, which flanks the Acropolis.
Stamati’s lawyer said she is refusing food in protest at being separated from her young son. She is expected to file a petition for release on Wednesday.
