Greek museum hooks up with Chinese institution
Two literary masters are coming together through their legacies. Following an initiative by the International Society of Friends of Nikos Kazantzakis — Greece?s most popular writer globally speaking — the Nikos Kazantzakis Museum in Iraklio, Crete, will establish formal links with China?s Lu Xun Museum, which is dedicated to ?the father of modern Chinese literature.?
The official ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Lu Xun Museum in Shaoxing, in Zhejiang Province, on the outskirts of Shanghai.
Four days prior to the event, the Kazantzakis Museum will hold a presentation of its work and activities at a Beijing conference organized by the International Society of Friends of Nikos Kazantzakis and the Greek Embassy in Beijing. The event will include speeches and presentations by the Greek Embassy?s Cultural Attache Elena Avramidou, Kazantzakis?s Chinese translator Li Chehggui and Kazantzakis Museum director Varvara Tsaka. A documentary on the Cretan author produced under the aegis of the Chinese Embassy in Athens will also be screened.
Zhou Shuren (1881-1936), who wrote under the pen name Lu Xun, became the first writer to use the Baihua Chinese vernacular. A prolific writer, Lu Xun produced novels, novellas and poems, while also working as an editor and translator.
