Prostitutes admit to drug use, say they didn’t know they had HIV
Sixteen sex workers said to have tested positive for HIV were remanded in the hospital of Attica?s high-security Korydallos Prison on Friday after defending themselves before a magistrate on charges of causing grievous bodily harm.
Of the 16 women, most of whom are said to be drug addicts, only one admitted that she was working full-time as a prostitute to secure her fixes. The others reportedly claimed to be addicts who sold sex on occasion.
According to sources, most of the prostitutes claimed to be unaware they were carrying the HIV virus that causes AIDS.
One of them was quoted as telling the magistrate: ?I would have sex for money on occasion. I was arrested, slept the night in a police cell and when I woke up they told me I have AIDS.?
A crowd of demonstrators gathered at Athens?s court complex on Friday to protest the authorities? decision to publish photos of the prostitutes as a health warning.
