AEK beats PAO, throwing playoffs wide open

The Champions League qualification playoffs of the Super League were thrown wide open on Monday as the second round has given all four participating teams a good chance of reaching the preliminary stages of Europe’s top club competition this summer.

Panathinaikos still holds the mini-table’s top spot, which leads to the Champions League qualifiers, despite its 2-0 loss at AEK through goals by Grigoris Makos and Viktor Klonaridis. The goals came in each half and both were particularly spectacular.

AEK should have also been awarded a penalty in the first half when Loukas Vyntra handled the ball in the area. AEK also hit the woodwork in the second period. The match also marked the return of Eidur Gudjohnsen a long layoff.

Thanks to its win, AEK moved up to third, one point behind second-placed PAOK. The Thessaloniki club got a 1-1 draw at Atromitos on Monday after leading in the first half courtesy of a Dimitris Salpigidis goal that was canceled out late in the game by Costas Mitroglou.

Panathinaikos has five points with four games left to play, PAOK has four, AEK has three and Atromitos is on two.

The next round of games is on Thursday, when PAOK hosts Panathinaikos and AEK meets Atromitos.
