Kammenos denies sending document to president

Panos Kammenos, the head of the Independent Greeks party — which came fourth in the May 6 polls — denied on Tuesday that he had sent a proposal to the Greek president on Monday outlining his position on the formation of a unity government, though he did not overrule that it may have been sent by on of his associates.

The office of President Karolos Papoulias — who is due to meet with political leaders later on Tuesday in a last-ditch effort to form a government — on Monday night had distributed a document to the leaders of the other political parties apparently originating from the office of Independent Greeks, stating that the party would support a unity government if it were matter of «national urgency.”

The proposal was also reported to have said that Kammenos would agree to supporting a unity government on the condition that Independent Greeks be given the Defense Ministry among other posts.

“This document is not mine, it has never been submitted by Independent Greeks, it is not stamped nor has a protocol number, and I did not give it to the president,» Kammenos told Skai TV on Tuesday, suggesting that the delivery of the document was a «provocation.»

However, Kammenos did not deny that the contentious document may have been sent by someone in his office, and said that he will be meeting with the president as scheduled at 2 p.m. He did not rule out meeting Papoulias earlier, «if the president has obtained the data on the real economy that I had requested,» he said, leaving open the possibility of a one-to-one talk with the president ahead of the meeting of party chief.
