Activists arrested on Syntagma Square
Police on Tuesday morning broke up a camp set up by activists from around Europe on Syntagma Square in front of Parliament, with minor scuffles breaking out and leading to 16 arrests.
The group of some 25 protesters from Spain, Italy, Ireland, France and Greece set up tents on Syntagma Square on Monday night in a sit-in protest against austerity measures and the European economic crisis.
When they refused to pack up their belongings on Tuesday morning to make way for municipal cleaning crews, the police was called in to disband the protest.
A few minor scuffles broke out as protesters resisted police efforts to clear the square and 16 people were taken into custody for questioning.
