Emperors with no clothes

The crippling debt crisis and the ensuing political paralysis dogging the country have brought to the fore most of Greece?s huge weaknesses.

The crisis has blatantly exposed the frivolity and emptiness of a number of jumped-up party leaders who were catapulted into the spotlight by the domestic media system simply because they voiced extreme and colorful views.

At the same time, a large section of the public has been led to believe many of the paranoid conspiracy theories that have been put forward over the past two-and-a-half years. These unfounded allegations have never been refuted by serious and responsible people with in-depth knowledge of the issues at hand.

It?s natural for frustrated voters to be attracted to crackpot views coming from populists on the far right and the far left of the political spectrum. Meanwhile, it is terrifying to see that at this crucial moment, Greece is depending on lightweight politicians while the public discourse is dominated by ignorance and paranoia.
