Diomidis Argous wins Euro handball cup

Greek handball earned on Monday its first European title as Diomidis Argous secured the Challenge Cup, the continent?s third-tier trophy.

The Greek champions, a new force in the domestic game, upset favorite Wacker Thun to become the unlikely winner of the two-leg final.

Diomidis had beaten its Swiss opponent 26-23 on May 20 at Loutraki, as its own court at Argos did not comply with European Handball Federation standards.

Monday?s return leg in Switzerland was a nail-biting affair, but the Greeks managed to defend their three-goal advantage as they lost 22-20, to the joy of the 100 or so traveling fans who enjoyed Greek handball?s most glorious moment ever.
