Tension rises outside Parliament

Tension rose outside Parliament on Wednesday afternoon as hooded demonstrators launched Molotov cocktails at riot police forces. The latter responded with tear gas, despite orders to refrain from using chemicals against protesters.

On Wednesday, tens of thousands of demonstrators marched to Parliament as part of a general strike in the public and private sector, the first since the three-party coalition government was formed in June.

A fire broke out in the nearby National Gardens, which were closed to the public on the day.

Molotov cocktail bombs were also launched at the Ministry of Finance in central Athens.
