Former Athens mayor dies

Former Athens Mayor Dimitris Beis died on Thursday at the age of 83.

A lawyer, Beis was elected and served as mayor for two consecutive terms, from 1979 to 1982 and from 1982 to 1986, when he was succeeded by Miltiadis Evert.

He was also elected to Parliament three times as a PASOK deputy, starting in 1989.
