Xenogiannakopoulou quits PASOK

Mariliza Xenogiannakopoulou on Thursday became the latest Socialist to leave the embattled PASOK party.

In a letter sent to PASOK chief Evangelos Venizelos, the 49-year-old former Health Minister said she was quitting PASOK in protest at the anticipated austerity measures as well as at recent developments within the once-dominant party which was recently polled in sixth place.

Xenogiannakopoulou failed to win a parliamentary seat in the last general elections.

Earlier on Thursday, Michalis Kassis, said he was resigning as PASOK deputy. Kassis said he was left with no choice after Venizelos said anyone not prepared to back the new package of measures should quit the party.
