Triumph for Olympiakos at Zalgiris

Olympiakos avenged its defeat at home to Zalgiris by scoring a 14-point win at Kaunas on Friday to edge closer to claiming the top spot of its Euroleague group. The Greeks triumphed 77-63 in impressive fashion.

The Reds led throughout the match, except for the end of the third period when the Lithuanians momentarily led 50-48, and grabbed a huge win thanks mostly to a spectacular last period when they scored a partial 29-13 score.

With an admirable 14 out of 27 scoring rate in three-pointers by the Greeks, there was little the Zalgiris defense could do to stop them.

Olympiakos shows a clear improvement after every single game and seems about to hit top form even though the season is still in its first quarter.

Vassilis Spanoulis was the top scorer for the European champion with 16 points, while Costas Papanikolaou added another 13.

This was Olympiakos’s sixth win in eight games and is level on points with Zalgiris at the top of the pool, but the Lithuanian team holds the lead as it has a better head-to-head record thanks to its 18-point victory in Piraeus.
