Municipal workers continue action
Municipal workers have said that they will continue to protest planned public sector layoffs by occupying municipalities across the country on Monday, as well as holding a rally to the Divani Caravel Hotel in Pangrati, near central Athens, where a meeting of the Central Association of Municipalities is being held in the morning.
Greece has promised its lenders the European Union and the International Monetary Fund that it will revamp its bloated public sector by putting as many as 27,000 workers into a layoff scheme. City and local workers are expected to be among the first to be laid off under the plan.
Municipal workers have been protesting the scheme for weeks with rallies, strikes and the occupation of municipal buildings, while dozens of mayors around the country have also resisted the measure.
The union representing city workers, POE-OTA also said that it will be participating in a 24-hours strike on Thursday called by the public sector umbrella union ADEDY.
