First win for Kavala, dramatic victory for PAOK

While there was no change at the top of the Basket League last weekend, the eighth round of games marked the first win for bottom club Enosi Kavalas.

This first victory was as sweet as it could be for the eastern Macedonian club, as it came at neighbors KAO Dramas with a 73-72 score, in the first game with its third coach for the season, Angelos Koronios, at the helm on Sunday. It was a very tight game that may well signal the recovery that the Kavala club needs, as it remains last.

The weekend’s other gripping game was that between PAOK and AGO Rethymnou in Thessaloniki. Before the game on Saturday the two teams had been level on 12 points from seven games, and finished the 40 minutes of the regulation time level on 76 points, too. However, Donnie McGrath had the last laugh for PAOK, leading the Thessaloniki club to a 91-85 win in overtime, with his 23 points in total.

Leader Olympiakos needed an emphatic second-half performance to thump Aris 100-65 at home on Monday and retain its 100 percent record in the league.

Panionios, in second, defeated visiting Panelefsiniakos 81-73, and is followed by PAOK and Panathinaikos; the Greens thrashed host Peristeri 76-41 in their best ever defensive record in the A1 league.

In other games, Apollon Patras sank Ilisiakos 94-72 and Ikaros saw off Kolossos with an 86-66 score.
