Panthrakikos sends AEK back to the bottom
AEK has returned to the bottom of the Super League table after suffering a 1-0 loss at Panthrakikos on Monday.
The battered Athens club is staring relegation in the face as it is now last in the table with 11 points from 14 games, a record low for the team that used to vie for the title with Panathinaikos and Olympiakos in the past.
Panthrakikos, who has also beaten Panathinaikos this year, took no prisoners and scored just after the hour mark when former Greece international Dimitris Papadopoulos fed Tahiti-born Marama Vahirua and he scored the game’s only goal at Komotini.
AEK, however, is protesting for a number of the referee’s decisions, suggesting that Papadopoulos set up Vahirua while being on an offside position. “The referee should be ashamed of himself,” said experienced AEK coach Ewald Lienen.
The result has now taken Panthrakikos up to the ninth spot in the table with 17 points.
