Road projects to restart after deal with contractors

Works on all four highway projects across the country which had ground to a halt are set to restart this coming spring after an agreement was reached between the state and the four consortiums concerned, it was announced on Wednesday.

The main change to the previous situation, which had halted the projects for the last couple of years, is that all four road projects will remain as they currently are, by postponing and not canceling the construction of the sections from Patra to Tsakona (in the Peloponnese), from Trikala to the Egnatia Highway and from Lamia to Xiniada (both in central Greece). The formula for the construction of these sectors will be decided in the next three years, but they remain within the context of the contracts.

The next step now concerns negotiations with banks for the funding of the stalled projects, with the state playing a key role in the talks even though the loans have been signed by the lenders and the consortiums, Development and Infrastructures Minister Costis Hatzidakis stated on Wednesday.
