Aris suffers in Cup, too, losing at Kallithea

Second-division Kallithea produced the upset of the week in the Greek Cup as it defeated Super League’s Aris 3-1 at home in the first leg of the round of 32 on Wednesday.

In fact the Athens team had a 3-0 lead a few minutes from time, but Yiannis Gianniotas spoiled the party for the host with his goal that has given genuine hopes to the Thessaloniki club in the second leg on December 23. Brazilian Alex D’Acol scored twice for Kallithea.

Super League strugglers Veria will also have a difficult task in the second leg, as it was held to a goalless draw by second-division side Thrasyvoulos Fylis. Atromitos was spared the blushes right at the end by equalizing (1-1) the Olympiakos Volou opener away from home.

AEK rested most of its top-pick players and drew 0-0 at Kavala, while PAOK had no problems against third-division’s new boys Aiginiakos, the club that has swapped divisions with neighboring Akadimia Platamona of the fourth tier. PAOK won 3-1 at Katerini, reducing the return leg to a mere formality.

In other games it was Larissa 0 Asteras Tripolis 0, Platanias 3 Anagennisi Karditsas 1, and Ethnikos Gazorou 1 Xanthi 1.
