Fabri is the new Panathinaikos coach
Spaniard Fabri Gonzalez is the new manager of Panathinaikos, the club announced on Tuesday, one day after relegating Juan Ramon Rocha back to the bench of the Under-20 team.
Fabriciano “Fabri” Gonzalez is a 57-year-old manager with plenty of experience in the second division in Spain but with few games in the top flight in Spain and none in Portugal, where he has also worked.
His big break came at Granada, the Spanish club he took from the third to the first division in just two seasons, from 2010 to 2012, before getting dismissed a year ago.
He has also worked for Lugo, Villarobledo, Mahones, Gandia, Manlleu, Merida, Logrones, Elche, Nastic de Tarragona, Murcia, Aviles, Zamora, Huesca, Almeria, Burgos, Alaves and Cartagena in Spain and for Ovarense, Campomaiorense and Marco in Portugal.
His last job was at Racing Santander, which he led to the relegation zone of the second division in Spain after four months in charge. He got the sack in December 2012.
He is said to have been chosen by agent Hugo Varela, who has undertaken the task of Panathinaikos’s chief scout and has won the confidence of president Yiannis Alafouzos.
Ferreira King, a former Ionikos player, will be Fabri’s assistant, Panathinaikos confirmed, along with the departure of former president Dimitris Gontikas from the club’s board.
