Panel of 13 MPs to probe Papaconstantinou named

Former Public Order Minister Christos Markoyiannakis has been chosen to head the parliamentary committee that will investigate ex-Finance Minister Giorgos Papaconstantinou over claims he doctored the Lagarde list of Greeks with deposits at an HSBC branch in Geneva.

Markoyiannakis is one of five New Democracy lawmakers who will sit on the 13-member panel, which will deliver a report to Parliament before the end of February so that it can decide whether Papaconstantinou’s immunity from prosecution should be lifted.

The ex-finance minister denies tampering with the list. SYRIZA will have three lawmakers on the committee, including lawyer Zoe Constantopoulou, who played a prominent role in the initial parliamentary investigation. PASOK, Independent Greeks, Golden Dawn, Democratic Left and the Communist Party will be represented by one deputy each. The committee is to begin questioning witnesses straight away.
