Ministers discuss fuel smuggling crackdown

Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras, Development Minister Costis Hatzidakis and Merchant Marine Minister Costas Mousouroulis met on Friday to discuss a government drive aimed at curbing fuel smuggling.

Last year’s increase in the consumption tax on heating oil helped has helped curb widespread fuel smuggling, worth an estimated 600 million euros annually, but the ministers agreed that more coordinated, and swifter, action needs to be taken to stamp out the scourge.

The installation of a system for controling the fuel outflow in pumps at gas stations in Athens and Thessaloniki is due to be completed by the end of March and its extension to gas stations across the country by March next year.
