Goal drought does not affect Olympiakos

Olympiakos needs three more wins in the remaining eight rounds of games of the Super League to clinch the title after beating Xanthi 2-0 on the road on Sunday, while PAOK dropped to third after a 0-0 draw with AEK in Athens on Saturday.

In a weekend of just nine goals in seven games and with three goalless draws, there was little excitement in this 22nd round of games, but Olympiakos will not mind.

The Reds bounced back from their 3-0 loss at Levante on Thursday for the Europa League to defeat Xanthi through goals by Paulo Machado and Rafik Djebbour.

AEK and PAOK did not only have each other to deal with, but also a waterlogged pitch at the Olympic Stadium of Athens, eventually settling for a stalemate in the end that left neither satisfied.

That result allowed Asteras Tripolis, who beat Veria 2-1 away to climb to second at the table. New signing Laszlo Lencse scored the winning goal in the second minute of injury time for the Peloponnesian team.

Aris climbed out of the relegation zone, sinking Panathinaikos ever lower thanks to a Prata Coelho header one minute from time that gave the Thessaloniki side a 1-0 win at the Kleanthis Vikelidis stadium. Aris had also missed a penalty in the first half as David Aganzo was denied by Panathinaikos keeper Orestis Karnezis.

Kerkyra scored a precious 2-1 win over Panionios at home to regain some hope of top-flight survival under new coach Yiannis Papacostas, while Panionios is looking for a new manager after the resignation of Dimitris Eleftheropoulos.

The games of Levadiakos vs Atromitos and PAS Giannina vs Panthrakikos finished goalless.

Monday will see the Cretan derby of OFI against Platanias.
