Navy shadows Turkish corvette in Greek territorial waters

Hellenic Navy vessels were on Wednesday evening monitoring the movements of a Turkish Navy corvette that was seen in Greek territorial waters between Myconos and Naxos in the eastern Cyclades between 11 a.m. and 2.30 p.m.

The Turkish vessel set sail from the Turkish port of Izmir on Tuesday morning, according to military sources.

The incident came just two weeks before Prime Minister Antonis Samaras is scheduled to visit Ankara for talks with Turkish government officials on a range of bilateral issues including a longstanding dispute regarding the two countries’ territorial waters and the continental shelf that Athens hopes to resolve in order to prospect for oil and gas in the Aegean.
