Lagarde list inquiry extended to March 29

A Parliamentary committee probing the handling of the so-called Lagarde list of wealthy Greek depositors by former Finance Minister Giorgos Papaconstantinou has decided to extend its inevestigation through March 29, it emerged on Friday.

The probe, launched last month, has made little apparent progress, partly due to contradictory testimony by witnesses and suggestions by prosecutors that a memory stick with the list, which was given to Papaconstantinou’s successor Evangelos Venizelos in July 2011, appears not to have been tampered with.

A total of 34 of Papaconstantinou’s former aides all denied having been given the CD containing the Lagarde list by the ex minister. The committee is expected to call several more former associates who are currently abroad.

The former socialist minister claims to have passed on the CD given to him in the fall of 2010 by former French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde to an aide who he has not identified.

Parliament voted last month to probe the ex minister after prosecutors said that the names of three of Papaconstantinou’s relatives had been removed from the list.
