Half-empty Karaiskakis stadium boos victorious Reds

Olympiakos is strolling to the league title, as after its 2-1 home win over Aris it needs just five points from seven games, but its few fans who saw the game in Piraeus booed the team for the second time in four days.

Just 72 hours after its elimination from the Europa League at the hands of Levante, Olympiakos had a good first half to lead Aris through goals by top Super League scorer Rafik Djebbour and by Yiannis Maniatis.

However, a lackluster second half saw Aris pull a goal back through substitute Nikos Angeloudis and threaten to snatch a much-needed point toward the end.

Most Olympiakos fans chose to vote with their feet, as the Karaiskakis Stadium was uncharacteristically half-empty on Sunday evening, while the Reds were booed off the pitch in the end.

The result was far worse for Aris, which is now back in the drop zone after fellow struggling Veria won 2-0 at Xanthi on Saturday.

Asteras Tripolis stayed in second for one more week after downing visiting Levadiakos 1-0. PAOK is one point behind the Peloponnesian club thanks to its convincing 3-1 win over bottom team Kerkyra in Thessaloniki, including two spectacular goals by Dimitris Salpigidis.

Panathinaikos returned to winning ways as a Toche brace and the first ever goal by Stergos Marinos saw the Greens defeat OFI Crete 3-1 in Athens. Panathinaikos has now moved up to joint sixth, three points from a play-off position.

AEK remains in relegation trouble after suffering a 2-1 reverse at Platanias Hanion, although the winning goal came after a highly controversial penalty decision.

In other weekend games, Atromitos and PAS Giannina shared a goalless draw while Panionios beat Panthrakikos 2-0 in the debut of coach Constantinos Panagopoulos, after he took over from his former boss, Dimitris Eleftheropoulos.
