Greek tax offices closed as employees stage protest

Tax offices all around Greece will be closed throughout Tuesday as employees have called a 24-hour strike and are staging a protest rally outside the Finance Ministry on central Syntagma Square, beginning at 11 a.m.

According to the union of tax workers, POE DOY, the protest aims at putting pressure on the government to abolish "unjust taxation policies" such as an emergency levy colloquially known as "xaratsi." The workers are also demanding that no one is fired from key posts at tax offices and that employees hired via the Supreme Council for Personnel Selection (ASEP) see their salaries restored to pre-memorandum levels.

The union of chartered accountants also said it would join the action, calling on its members to refrain from conducting any transactions with tax authorities until Wednesday.
