Officer in Athens mayor’s security detail among those arrested for illegal excavations

One of three police officers arrested earlier this month on charges of carrying out illegal archaeological digs was working in Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis’s personal security detail, Kathimerini has learned.

The unnamed 44-year-old officer was serving at the Nea Makri precinct in northeastern Attica, and had been assigned to Kaminis’s residential guard.

The 44-year-old, along with another two active policemen, aged 24 and 46, and a retired officer aged 50, are being accused of conducting illegal excavations for gold coins and ancient artifacts in Agrinio, western Greece, and in Marathon, northeast of Athens. The charges relate to specific digs conducted in February 2012.
