Injuries and arrests following new clashes at Skouries gold mine
At least eight people suffered minor injuries and three people were arrested during another day of tension between protesters and police at the Skouries gold mine in Halkidiki, northern Greece.
Protesters accused the police of using tear gas to prevent a demonstration against the gold mine. Protesters included a group of women marking Mothers’ Day.
Police said that eight policemen and one demonstrator were injured. Some officers were wounded by lead shot, police said.
Public Order Minister Nikos Dendias said policemen had been shot at during the demonstration. He said that since the courts had ruled the mining project legal opponents could impose their will “with hunting rifles and Molotov cocktails”.
A video posted online showed three women being arrested and demonstrators said that some of their number was injured.
