Success stories

Chinese shipping giant Cosco’s investment in the port of Piraeus has proved very successful. However, we should not forget the war against this investment that has been waged by unionists and the champions of populism.

Cosco is not the only example of an investment that was initially deemed controversial and then proved to be a paradigm for others. The same happened with the privatizations of OTE telecom, now a successful company rather than the state-run body with dismal services that it once was. The same happened with Olympic Airlines, a state-owned money pit that has today been replaced by two excellent private carriers. And, of course, the same happened with the Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center in southern Athens, maniacally opposed initially and now the biggest investment currently under way in the capital.

Let us remember these examples next time the naysayers try to stop a major investment or development project.
