More checks for undeclared labor

The Labor Inspection Corps (SEPE) and the Special Monitoring Service (EYPEA) will start conducting joint checks to combat undeclared labor in Greece, placing more emphasis on holiday destinations, Labor Minister Yiannis Vroutsis and Public Order Minister Nikos Dendias announced on Wednesday after a meeting.

The phenomenon has taken on huge proportions with evasion of social security contribution payment exceeding 6.5 billion euros per year, according to estimates.

SEPE has already drafted a plan for snap checks on nine islands, aiming to focus on enterprises that are involved with tourism.

Besides the joint checks, the two ministries will set up a violations register and use data from various state authorities on legislation regarding public contracts, so that companies which have repeatedly broken the law will cease to qualify for contracts with the state.
