Greek student arrested in Turkey protests

The Foreign Ministry in Athens confirmed Thursday that a Greek student has been detained in Turkey on allegations that he helped provoke the Gezi Park protests in Istanbul.

Local media report that Turkish police have also detained four Americans, two British, two French, two Iranians, one German, and one Indian citizen in connection with the ongoing anti-government protests.

The Greek national, whose identity has not been made known, was reportedly in Turkey under the Erasmus student exchange program.

Demonstrators have been rallying in Istanbul, Ankara and other Turkish cities for a week, with many calling for Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to step down.

Protests mushroomed after police cracked down on activists defending an Istanbul park from developers.

Three people have been killed and thousands injured in the unrest.
