Venizelos meets Davutoglu in Ankara

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos met with his Turkish counterpart Ahmet Davutoglu in Ankara on Friday as part of a lightning visit to the Turkish capital.

Venizelos, who visited Ankara in response to an invitation by Davutoglu, was expected to discuss the situation in the eastern Aegean and the Cyprus problem with his Turkish counterpart.

Talks on the Cyprus issue, which are being mediated by the United Nations, are expected to resume in October. Nicosia is expected to submit an appeal to the European Union’s council of foreign ministers for the port of Famagusta to be returned to Cyprus.

Venizelos met last week with his Cypriot counterpart Yiannis Kasoulides. The two men also discussed the regional impact of the recent TAP gas pipeline deal and of closer cooperation between Greece, Cyprus and Israel.
