Police block group from switching on ERT signal [Update]

Eight people were taken into custody late on Monday after breaking into the enclosure protecting the defunct ERT state broadcaster’s transmitter station on Athens’s Mount Hymettus, during a protest by some 80 individuals over the closure of the broadcaster.

A police patrol in the area spotted members of the group after they had cut through the fence. It is believed that they were trying to switch the transmitter back on.

ERT was shut down by the government in June as it undergoes restructuring in a controversial move that has given rise to dozens of protests from fired employees and other groups supporting the staff of ERT.

The eight suspects faced an Athens prosecutor on Tuesday.
