Court acquits former rector, leftist of charges brought against them in lawsuits filed by Golden Dawn
An Athens court on Wednesday acquitted a left-wing intellectual and the former rector of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) over defemation and other charges brought against them in lawsuits filed by extreme right paty Golden Dawn.
Savvas Michail, the general secretary of the Workers Revolutionary Party, a small Troskyist group, had been accused by Golden Dawn of defamation, incitement to violence and breach of the peace in connection to an article published in the party newspaper. The story urged readers to “smash fascism.”
Meanwhile, NTUA rector Constantinos Moutzouris had been accused of allowing the anti-establishment Indymedia website to operate from the university’s premises. The ex-rector had already been acquitted of such charges twice.
