Gov’t spokesman says all corruption cases will be probed thoroughly

Government spokesman Simos Kedikoglou said on Friday that the government was determined to pursue all investigations of corruption in public life to their conclusion, telling Skai television that “nothing will remain in the dark.”

“We are determined,” Kedikoglou said. “Every suspicion of corruption will be investigated to the end.”

The fact that the authorities’ examination of the annual source of wealth (pothen esches) declarations by politicians have became more detailed has led to further revelations, Kedikoglou said, noting that authorities have more tools than in the past to fight corruption in public life.

The spokesman noted that in 2004, a parliamentary committee in which he had participated and which had probed former Defense Minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos in connection with arms procurements, had “very limited access to documents.” Even now, he said, such committees call on MPs to play the role of investigating magistrates and detectives but did not give them the tools to do so,” he said.
