Supreme Court prosecutor orders probe into EU and state funding

Supreme Court prosecutor Efterpi Koutzamani (photo) on Wednesday ordered prosecutors across Greece to conduct a series of investigations regarding European Union and state funding that was used for purposes other than the ones originally designated for.

The move came in the wake of allegations that former ex-Transport Minister Michalis Liapis had illegally claimed EU funding to renovate a holiday home in Evritania, central Greece. The allegations have been rejected by the Liapis family.

Koutzamani noted that in cases where violations were detected the funding would have to be returned.
