Tsipras meets with Ecumenical Patriarch
Leftist opposition leader Alexis Tsipras on Thursday met with Ecumenical Patriarch Vartholomaios, the spiritual leader of Orthodox Christians, in Athens.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Tsipras, who is the leader of SYRIZA, said he briefed Vartholomaios about his candidacy for European Commission president.
Talks also focused on the impact of austerity policy in Greece, protection of the environment, and the need to review Europe’s immigration policy, the leftist leader said.
Vartholomaios was in Athens to attend Wednesday’s ceremony marking Greece’s assumption of the EU’s rotating presidency. Tsipras boycotted the event.
