Iranian had ear bitten off during racist attack in Athens

An Iranian immigrant had his ear bitten off during a racially-motivated attack in Athens, the Doctors of the World humanitarian aid organization said Friday.

The victim, identified only as Shaid, was allegedly attacked two months ago near Metaxourgio square in central Athens. In a recorded interview shared by the organization, the victim says he was assaulted by three black-clad men while he was speaking on his cell phone.

“They beat me. Then one of them put his arm around my neck in a headlock before bitting my ear off with his teeth,” Shaid says. “I was bleeding and my ear fell on the ground.”

A friend of his found his ear on the ground and rushed Shaid to the hospital where doctors were ultimately unable to reattach it.

After he left hospital, the victim found shelter with the Doctors of the World.

“I have seen no civilization in Europe, no love,” Shaid tells the camera.
