Athens mayor, SYRIZA oppose change to dates of local elections in May

Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis voiced on Monday his concerns about rumors that the government is planning on changing its proposed date for local elections in May.

Interior Minister Yiannis Michelakis said in December that the first round of the local polls would take place on May 25, in conjunction with European Parliament elections, and the second round a week later.

However, on Monday morning he told Mega TV that the government is now thinking of having the first round of local elections on May 18 and the second, when the control of key cities is likely to be decided, on May 25.

“The government has to be very careful with its choices because it could damage the prestige of the local elections,» said Kaminis.

SYRIZA also said it opposed a change to the original plan. It said the new proposal was a «cheap trick» aimed at increasing support for the government at the ballot box.
