Ex-Thessaloniki mayor to appeal life term for embezzlement
The former mayor of Thessaloniki Vassilis Papageorgopoulos, who was handed a life sentence 11 months ago for masterminding the embezzlement of some 18 million euros of municipal funds, is to appeal the original verdict on Thursday.
A court in the northern port city will begin hearing his attempt to overturn the decision, which led to him been jailed at Diavata Prison last February.
Papageorgopoulos insists he was not involved in the embezzlement.
The municipality’s former general secretary, Michalis Lemousias, who was also given a life term, will also be appealing his sentence.
